FRESNO, CA – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Fresno State, 14-6, Tuesday night in Fresno, CA. Iowa’s record falls to 3-3, while the Bulldogs are 9-11.
The game started off with a bang for the Hawkeyes, as Jason White and Travis Sweet led off the top of the first with back-to-back home runs. Fresno State killed the excitement in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-2 lead with a trio of runs. White ended the day a team-best 3-of-5 with three RBIs.
Iowa tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the third with an RBI triple from Brian Burmester, but the Bulldogs responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to re-take the lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Fresno State stretched their lead to 10-3 with an RBI single and a three-run home run.
The Hawkeyes got a run in the fifth on a solo home run from Dusty Napoleon, but once again the Bulldogs responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 13-4
Iowa made a late-inning run, getting a pair of runs in the top of the eighth off a two-run triple from White, but Fresno State added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning and shut the Hawkeyes down in the ninth for the win.
Kyle Riffel was 3-of-4 with a runs scored, while Napoleon and Wes Freie had two hits apiece.
Steve Turnbull (1-1) took the loss after giving up seven runs in three innings pitched. Joe Singer pitched well in relief for Iowa, allowing just two hits in three shutout innings.
Iowa will take on Fresno State tomorrow night in game one of the Pepsi Johnny Quick Classic. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. (CDT).
