IOWA CITY, IA – The 55th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes fell to 38th-ranked Indiana today, 5-2. Iowa is now 5-7 on the season, including 1-1 in Big Ten play.
In doubles competition, Iowa lost the point to the Hoosiers with all three of Iowa’s duos losing their matches, 8-3.
In singles play, at the first spot, Jacqueline Lee was successful, defeating Alba Berdala, 6-1, 6-4. Mili Veselinovic went into a tiebreaking set with Laura McGaffigan. McGaffigan ended up claiming the match with a score of 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Veselinovic has won 10 of her last 14 singles matches.
Hillary Mintz lost to Sigrid Fischer, 6-2, 6-1 at the third spot, while Kayla Berry fell to Brianna Williams, 6-4, 6-3, at the fourth singles position. At the number five singles spot, Kelcie Klockenga was defeated by Cecile Perton, 6-2, 6-4.
At the sixth singles position, Merel Beelen went into a tiebreaker, but came out on top. She defeated Lindsey Stuckey, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8). Beelen is now 10-2, winning 15 of her last 17 matches.
“We started off too slow in doubles play today,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “We recovered well at the beginning of singles play and gave ourselves a chance, but Indiana was the better team today. They fought a good battle and I have to give them credit.”
Iowa will return to action Sunday, hosting Ohio State at 11 a.m.
