Box Score

Woodstock, GA – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Dartmouth (1-0) and Georgia Southern (2-0) Saturday at the Buzz Classic. The Hawkeyes used two great pitching performances to seal the victories.

In game one, junior Stephanie Ackerson threw a complete game one-hitter and tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts against Dartmouth. Ackerson retired 15 of the next 16 batters after giving up the lone hit in the second inning and struck out the side to end the game.

Junior Emily Nichols scored Iowa’s lone run of the contest in the fourth inning when she started the frame with her fifth home run of the season. She finished game one 2-3 at the plate.

Freshman Amanda Zust and the Hawkeye defense paced Iowa in game two against Georgia Southern. Zust threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out four and walking three. Iowa’s outfield of Rachel West, Mindy Heidgerken and Lindsey Emery made many nice catches to keep Georgia Southern off the scoreboard.

Iowa scored both of its runs in the second inning against Georgia Southern. Sophomore Colleen McGlaughin started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sami Baugh. West then roped an RBI triple to score McGlaughlin for a 1-0 lead. West later scored off a ground ball by Ackerson for the final 2-0 advantage.

Nichols went 1-2 in game two, increasing her hitting streak to 17 games.

The Hawkeyes will face Troy Sunday at 10 a.m. in the silver bracket. Check www.hawkeyesports.com Sunday for an updated tournament schedule.
