VanDenend And Nukuri Steal The Show

March 3, 2007

Ames, IA –

The University of Iowa men’s and women’s track teams both competed today at the NCAA Qualifier meet held in Ames. The meet gives the athletes one, final chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships, to be held in Fayetteville, AR.

The women added one event to their provisional qualifier list, when Diane Nukuri placed second in the Mile with a time of 4:46.25. The Mile marks her third event in which she has provisionally qualified and the Hawkeyes ninth. She previously has qualified in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Nukuri placed second in the mile behind senior Meghan Armstrong. Armstrong ran a season best time of 4:41.18, just missing an automatic qualifying time by less than one second.

Although the men were unable to qualify any additional athletes for the NCAA Championships, that did not stop them from gaining some attention. Senior Micah VanDenend took first place and shattered the meet record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:56.46. The record previously stood at 13:57.20, set by Jim Jurevich of Michigan State. The Hawkeyes were once again dominating in the throws. Senior Adam Hamilton improved his provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw with a career best toss of 66-9 ¼, good enough for second place. The shot put was cluttered with Hawkeyes near the top. Shane Maier placed second (57-8 ½), John Hickey third (56-11 ½) and A.J. Curtis fourth (55-0 ¾).

The Hawkeyes will be competing in the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, AR, on March 9-10.
