UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The 59th-ranked Hawkeyes defeated Penn State, 5-2 today, improving their spring record to 7-7 including 3-1 in Big Ten play.
In doubles action, Penn State took the lead as Sarah Lotto and Jenny Shular defeated Hillary Mintz and Merel Beelen, 8-4. The Hawkeyes came back strong and evened the doubles score with Jacqueline Lee and Milica Veselinovic’s win over Sasha Abraham and Lauren Holzberg, 8-4. Iowa clinched the doubles point with a 9-8 win for Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga over Dorothy Dohanics and Lauren McCarthy.
In singles action, Mintz defeated Holzberg, 6-0, 6-2, to bring the match total to 2-0. Berry’s loss to Shular (6-2, 6-4) brought the match to 2-1.
Iowa took control with a 6-2, 6-3 win for Veselinovic over Abraham in second singles and a 6-4, 6-3 first singles win for Lee over Andreea Niculescu. Beelen defeated McCarthy, 6-3, 6-3, increasing her record to 12-2. Beelen has won 17 of her last 19 matches. Klockenga was the last to finish singles play, falling to Dohanics in a tiebreaking set, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Iowa will compete at Michigan at 10 a.m. Sunday.
