IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa Hawkeyes lost the series opener with Penn State, 6-1, Friday afternoon at Banks Field. The Hawkeyes season record falls to 11-9 (1-4 Big Ten) the Nittany Lions improve to 8-15 (2-2 Big Ten).
Iowa got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kevin Hoef hit an RBI groundout.
The Nittany Lions tied things up with a run in the second, then took a 2-1 lead when Matt Cavagnaro led off the third with a solo home run.
Penn State added a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout, then added a pair more in the seventh, highlighted by back-to-back triples from Cavagnaro and Scott Gaffney. The Nittany Lions added an insurance run in the ninth and were looking for more before the Hawkeyes turned a slick 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Jason White led the Hawkeye offense, going 2-3 and scoring the only Iowa run. Caleb Curry also went 2-3.
Nick Erdman started on the hill for the Hawkeyes, going six innings and taking the loss. Erdman scattered seven hits, allowed five runs and struck-out one. Mike Jacobs pitched the final three innings, giving up three hits and one run.
The Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
