IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes move to 13-9 (3-4 Big Ten) and the Nittany Lions drop to 8-17 (2-4 Big Ten) on the season.
The Hawkeyes got on the board early, scoring two in the bottom half of the second. Caleb Curry led off the inning with a single and scored on a Brian Burmester double. Burmester then came around to score on a Kevin Hoef groundout. Penn State narrowed the gap in the top of the third, but the Hawkeyes would add four runs in the home half of the third. Again, the Nittany Lions added a run in the top of the fourth.
Steve Turnbull took the mound for the Hawkeyes and went 3 1/3, striking out two, allowing four hits, two runs but walking four. Scott Brune came in relief for 2 2/3 giving up only a walk and striking out two. Scott Gaffney started for Penn State, going three innings, allowing five hits, six runs – three of which were unearned – two walks and a strike-out.
Caleb Curry batted clean-up for the first time this season and went 1-3 with a pair of runs to lead the Hawkeye offense. Kyle Riffel, Dusty Napoleon, Jason White and Brian Burmester all scored a run.
The Hawkeyes return to action Tuesday, when they travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. at Hawks Field.
