Hawkeyes End Regular Season Strongly

April 22, 2007

IOWA CITY, IA – The 59th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes upset No. 50 Purdue today, 4-3, in their final regular season match. Iowa ends the spring season with an 11-9 record including 7-3 in Big Ten competition.

In doubles play, Iowa earned the point with two wins. Hillary Mintz and Merel Beelen defeated Neela Vaez and Cigdem Duru, 8-6, while Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga beat Anna Dzeva and Alejandra Boeker, 8-6. Mili Veselinovic and Jacqueline Lee dropped an 8-3 decision to Mallory Voelker and Brooke Beier.

In singles play, Klockenga was the first to finish, defeating Boeker at the sixth spot, 6-0, 6-1. Veselinovic then brought the match to a 3-0 Iowa lead with her win over Beier, 6-3, 6-3. Purdue began a comeback at the number one singles spot. Lee fell to Voelker, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, to bring the match to 3-1. Next, Berry lost at the number four spot to Duru, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. With the match at 3-2, Beelen fell to Dzeva, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“We had very windy conditions today, and a Purdue team that refused to go away after we built a 3-0 lead,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan.

Mintz was the last to finish, and in her last match as a Hawkeyes, the senior was a star for the Hawkeyes. Mintz defeated Vaez at the number three singles spot, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, earning the victory for Iowa.

“Mintz was the hero today on her senior day. I’m very proud of how the girls competed in the final stretch of our spring competitions this season,” said Greenan.

Iowa will compete at Big Ten Championships next weekend hosted by the University of Minnesota.
