Chandler Selected by Chargers

April 29, 2007

IOWA CITY — Scott Chandler, the University of Iowa’s talented senior tight end, became the second Iowa Hawkeye to be selected in the 2007 NFL Draft when San Diego picked the Texas native Sunday in the fourth round.

Chandler was the 129th player selected overall when the Chargers made him the 30th pick in the fourth round. Chandler’s offensive teammate, lineman Marshal Yanda, was selected by Baltimore in the third round of the NFL’s annual draft of the top college football players in the country.

“The Hawkeyes have produced several tight ends during the Kirk Ferentz era that went on to perform at the National Football League level,” reads Chandler’s online biography page on chargers.com.

“During his eight years in charge of the Hawkeyes football program, Ferentz has sent Austin Wheatley (New Orleans, fifth round, 2000 draft), Dallas Clark (Indianapolis, first round, 2003), Erik Jensen (St. Louis, seventh round, 2004) and Tony Jackson (Seattle, sixth round, 2005) to the NFL. Many scouts are eagerly anticipating the arrival of another Ferentz protégé in 2007 – Scott Chandler.”

Chandler is the 48th starter for the Hawkeyes over the past eight seasons to be selected in the NFL Draft or to have signed an NFL free agent contract. He joins former UI teammate and All-Pro placekicker Nate Kaeding, and former Hawkeyes Derreck Robinson and Mike Goff on the San Diego roster.

Kaeding was a third round pick of the Chargers in the 2004 NFL Draft. Robinson signed a free agent contract with the team in the spring of 2004 and Goff also joined San Diego as a free agent in 2004.

A second team all-Big Ten selection in 2006, Chandler completed his career at Iowa as its 17th most productive receiver with117 catches for 1,467 yards.
