Curtis Sets School Record

April 7, 2007

PELLA, IA –

Hawkeye sophomore thrower A.J. Curtis set a school record and qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional in the discus with his winning throw of 202-11 at the Central College Invitational Saturday in Pella, IA. The previous record of 202-4 was set in 1986 by Gary Kostrubala.

Curtis’ throw also set a meet record and smashed his previous personal best of 173-11 in that event. He and Kostrubala are the only two Hawkeyes in school history to throw over 200 feet in that event.

Curtis and five other Hawkeye throwers braved the cold temperatures that dropped into the twenties and wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour to compete in the meet. Iowa placed sixth with 38 points with six competitors in two events. Hastings College won the men’s team title with 174.

Iowa’s other five throwers placed in the top eight of the hammer throw. Senior Adam Hamilton won the event with a throw of 199-4, which also set a new meet record. Junior Kale Katt placed second (178-0), senior Ryan Jordan placed fourth (171-3), sophomore John Hickey placed fifth (169-11) and sophomore Mark Schaapveld placed eighth (163-0). Katt and Hickey recorded collegiate-best marks with their performances.

The Hawkeyes’ next competition will be April 13-14 at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, OK. All events will be held at John Jacobs Field on the Oklahoma University campus.
