June 6, 2007

SACRAMENTO, CA –

Three Hawkeyes advanced out of Wednesday’s qualifying round at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, CA. Seniors Peaches Roach (high jump) and Adam Hamilton (hammer throw) advanced to Friday’s finals in their respective events, while junior Kineke Alexander (400 meters) advanced to Friday’s semifinal in her race.

Senior Micah VanDenend was scheduled to run in the men’s 5,000 meters at 10:50 p.m. (CT) and junior Racheal Marchand was set to compete in the women’s 5,000 meters at 11:30 p.m. Live results from those races are available at http://www.flashresults.com/2007_Meets/outdoor/NCAADivisionI/index.htm.

Alexander won her heat (52.13) and posted the best overall time in the 400-meter prelims. Roach was one of seven competitors to post the best first round mark in the high jump, leaping a 5-10 3/4 in the qualifying round. Hamilton placed third in his heat of the hammer (211-6) and posted the seventh-best throw overall to qualify for the finals.

Senior Tiffany Johnson finished her stellar Hawkeye career Wednesday evening. The Danville, IL, native placed 16th in the first round of the 100-meter hurdles (13.34) to advance to the semifinals, but hit the first hurdle in the semifinals and did not finish the race.

Five Hawkeyes will compete in Thursday’s events at the national meet. Junior Tammilee Kerr will tackle four heptathlon events, freshman Ray Varner will run the first round of the men’s 400-meter hurdles, junior Shane Maier will compete in the men’s shot put qualifier, and junior distance runners Meghan Armstrong and Diane Nukuri will compete in the 1,500 and 10,000 meters, respectively.
