Hawkeyes Perform At NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, CA –

The University of Iowa men and women’s track teams competed in day two of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday in Sacramento, CA.

After four events, junior Tammilee Kerr is in 20th place in the heptathlon with 3,116 points. She placed 16th in the 100-meter hurdles (14.22), 17th in the 200 meters (25.59), 21st in the shot put (36-4) and 22nd in the high jump (5-3) Thursday. She will compete in the final three events – long jump, javelin and 800 meters – Friday. Junior Diane Nukuri was set to run in the women’s 10,000 meter finals at 10:40 p.m. (CT) Thursday. Juniors Shane Maier and Meghan Armstrong, and freshman Ray Varner did not qualify for the finals in Thursday’s preliminary events. Maier placed 19th in the men’s shot put (57-3 1/2), Armstrong placed 16th in the women’s 1,500 meters (4:21.44) and Varner placed 27th in the men’s 400-meter hurdles (53.27).

Senior Micah VanDenend and junior Racheal Marchand competed in the 5,000-meter preliminaries late Wednesday night, but neither advanced to the finals. VanDenend placed 21st (14:34.10) in the men’s race, and Marchand placed 24th (16:41.35) in the women’s race.

Four Hawkeyes are scheduled to compete at the national meet Friday. Seniors Adam Hamilton and Peaches Roach will make their final career appearances in the hammer throw (3:15 p.m.) and high jump (7:15 p.m.), respectively. Kerr will finish out the heptathlon, and junior Kineke Alexander will run in the 400-meter semifinals at 8:05 p.m.
