Sept. 9, 2007

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa field hockey team improved its record to 5-1 after defeating Missouri State (0-6) 6-1, on Sunday. After being behind 1-0 early, the Hawkeyes stormed back to score six unanswered goals. Five players scored for Iowa, including junior Katie Naughton who scored two, along with one assist.

“We knew that we were playing against a good goalkeeper.” Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum continued, “We needed to be aggressive for the entire game in order to reach the point total that we were looking for.”

The Bears scored the first goal of the game during the 21st minute, coming from a penalty corner.

Naughton evened the score during the 22nd minute, after receiving an assist from sophomore Tricia Dean. Only six minutes later, the Hawkeyes were awarded a penalty corner. Junior Lauren Pfeiffer passed the ball to senior Kadi Sickel who slammed the ball past the Missouri State defense.

The Hawkeyes continued to dominate after halftime. Their third goal of the game came from the stick of Pfeiffer after she received a pass from Roz Ellis during the 42nd minute.

In the 58th minute, the Hawkeyes were awarded with a penalty stroke. Ellis took the shot and slapped the ball past the Bears’ goalkeeper, making the score 4-2.

Junior Caitlin McCurdy scored her first goal of the season during the 64th minute. She was able to flip the ball over the goalkeeper after receiving the pass from Naughton. Naughton capped off the Iowa scoring by converting on a rebounded shot during the 67th minute.

The No. 4 Hawkeyes will return to action Sept. 15 against Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CT at noon (CT).
