IOWA CITY, IA – In a physical start to Big Ten play, the Hawkeyes continued their winning ways on Friday, defeating Michigan State 1-0. The win was the Hawkeyes’ fifth in a row and improved Iowa’s record against the Spartans to 3-7-1. The Hawkeyes had not won five matches in a row since 1999.

Redshirt sophomore Jackie Kaeding scored her second goal of the season off a rebound from an Alexandria Seydel corner kick. Junior Kelsey Shaw was also credited with the assist.

“This win was a great way to start the Big Ten slate,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “I liked the way we battled in the second half and we responded well when Michigan State pushed us.”

Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt recorded her fifth shutout of the season in the win. Despite being without freshman Jenna Aleo, the Hawkeye defense was still outstanding, not allowing Michigan State to get any offense going in the attacking third. Freshman Mandy Heimann got the start in Aleo’s absence and senior Melisa Kaetterhenry also made a return from a foot injury that sidelined her for much of September.

The Hawkeyes continue conference play this Sunday against Michigan. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the UI Soccer Complex.
