Hawkeyes Finish First Two Days At Roberta Alision Fall Classic

TUSCALOOSA, AL –

The Iowa women’s tennis team completed its second day of competition today at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama. Combining singles and doubles, the Hawkeyes posted a 2-10 record Friday and a 1-8 record today.

Freshman Jessica Young defeated Britney Cloer of UNC Greensboro, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the first round Friday and continued her winning streak today by defeating Nadia Lysak of Auburn Montgomery, 6-2, 7-5, in the second round. Young will continue competition tomorrow and is set to face Whitnie Warren of Belmont in the championship round.

In doubles, Beelen/Poggensee-Wei ended Friday with a 1-1 record. Beelen/Poggensee-Wei defeated Behr/Eblen of UNC Greensboro, 8-5, in the first round before falling to de Villiers/Makarycheva of Mississippi State, 8-6, in the second round. Today, Beelen/Poggensee-Wei fell to Wente/Suess of Florida State, 8-5, ending with a 1-2 doubles record at the classic. Doubles competition concluded this evening while singles competition will continue through tomorrow.

In others singles action, Hawkeye senior Milicia Veselinovic was defeated Friday in the first round by Delia Sescioveanu of Montgomery, AL, 6-1, 7-5. Veselinovic was defeated today in competition by Alejandra Guerra of UNC Greensboro, 7-5, 6-0, but is set to face Carolin Walter of Florida State in tomorrow’s competition. Senior Kayla Berry and sophomore Kelcie Klockenga faced tough competitors today and Friday as well. Berry fell to Anna Jackson of Samford, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of competition Friday. Berry was defeated today by Korem Fleming of UNC Charlotte, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, but will face Valerie Behr of UNC Greensboro in tomorrow’s final day of competition. Klockenga was also defeated in the first round Friday by Federica Suess of Florida State, 6-1, 6-3, and fell to Gaby Beelen of Auburn, 6-2, 6-3, today. Klockenga is scheduled to face Erica Zabkar of UNC Greensboro tomorrow.

The other two Hawkeye doubles teams were defeated in the final rounds of doubles competition today. Veselinovic/Young were defeated by El Sisi/Guijt of Troy, 8-6, while Berry/Klockenga fell to Fleming/Alexander of UNC Charlotte, 9-7. Both teams had lost in their first round of competition on Friday.

Tomorrow will mark the final day of competition at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. Competition will begin at 8 a.m. at the University of Alabama Tennis Complex.
