The Hawkeyes continued competition at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Saturday and Sunday with senior Jacqueline Lee advancing to Sunday’s quarterfinals.
Lee, seeded 13th in the tournament, defeated sixth seed V. Frankowski (EMU) 7-6(5), 6-2, in second round play to advance to the quarterfinals. Lee was defeated in quarterfinal play by T. Mahtani (U-M) 6-4, 6-4, bringing her main draw singles record to 3-1. Also winning main draw matches this weekend were Milica Veselinovic, seeded 15th, who defeated J. Schickerling (ISU) 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-1, in first round play. Veselinovic fell to A. DiPastina (OSU) 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, in the 32-player second round of play.
In other singles action, Alexis Dorr was defeated in first round competition by first seed G. Rose (NW) 6-2, 6-1, but was successful in consolation play, defeating V. Leszayova (Drake) 6-0, 6-0.
In main draw doubles competition, both of Iowa’s seeded doubles teams advanced to third round play. A. Dorr/J. Lee, seeded fourth, defeated B. Murisic/S. Salkovic (DEP) 8-2, in first round play and continued the second round of competition by defeating H. Rush/C. Ruiz (MAR) 9-8(3), but fell to A. Conill/M. Mosolova (NW) 8-1, in the third round of competition.
Tenth seed Merel Beelen and Milica Veselinovic were also victorious in the first and second rounds of doubles main draw competition. M. Beelen/M. Veselinovic defeated B. Larson/M. Martzolf (MIA) 8-6 in first round play, and moved on to defeat C. Hubbs/A. Mueller (OSU) 9-8(4), in the second round of competition. M. Beelen/M. Veselinovic were defeated in third round play by first seed Lui/G. Rose (NW) 8-3. Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei were successful in doubles first round play, defeating J. Buterbaugh/K. Donohue (BRAD) 8-5, but fell to third seed J. Migan/J. Schickerling (ISU) 9-7, in the second round of competition.
Competition will continue today and conclude tomorrow at the University of Michigan tennis facilities. This will be the final tournament for the Iowa Women’s tennis team this fall. The Hawkeyes will return to competition in January when they host the Hawkeye Invitational Jan. 25-27.
