The Iowa women’s tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Hoosier Classic today. The Hawkeyes won six singles matches and will begin doubles competition tomorrow.
Kelcie Klockenga ended competition today with a 2-0 singles record. Klockenga defeated Yuko Kobayashi of Western Michigan, 6-2, 6-0 in first round play, and went on to defeat Alejandra Meza-Cuadra of Illinois, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. Milica Veselinovic defeated Sarah Meghoufel of Indiana State, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Alba Berdala of Indiana, 7-5, 6-0.
Alexis Dorr, Jacqueline Lee and Merel Beelen all ended today’s singles competition with a victory. Dorr fell to Charlotte Martin of Indiana, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round, but defeated Marisa Lambropoulos of Illinois, 6-2, 7-5, in the second round of play. Beelen defeated Kunigunda Dorn of Kansas, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round after falling to Courtney Ulery of Vanderbilt in the first round. Lee fell in the first round of play to Naoko Ueshima of Georgia, 6-2, 6-1, before defeating Kate Zapadalova of Indiana, 6-2, 6-2, in today’s second round of play.
The Hawkeyes will continue singles competition, and begin doubles competition, tomorrow at the University of Indiana tennis facilities.
