SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — Utah State shot 52.4 percent from the field in the second half (11 of 21) and 50 percent for the game (24 of 48) during a 75-62 victory over the University of Iowa on Saturday in men’s basketball during the consolation finals of the South Padre Invitational.
The Aggies, who led the entire game, evened their season record at 4-4 and dropped the Hawkeyes to their second consecutive setback after four victories.
Justin Johnson led Iowa in scoring with 14 points in 34 minutes. Johnson made 5 of 16 field goals and 2 of 11 three-pointers. Kurt Looby made 5 of 6 field goals and finished with 10 points. He also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds with five of those coming on the offensive end. Jarryd Cole scored 10 points with six rebounds and Seth Gorney and Jake Kelly both scored eight points.
Although the Hawkeyes dominated inside with 18 points in the paint to just two for the Aggies, Utah State proved more proficient from beyond the arc, canning 10 three-point goals.
Iowa returns to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Monday to face Wake Forest in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Tip-off is 6:05 p.m.
