Hawkeyes Start Strong At Big Ten Singles

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team finished day one at the Big Ten Singles Championship in Ann Arbor, MI. The first and second rounds of the 32-player qualifying draw were completed Friday. The Hawkeyes claimed three singles matches at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Three Hawkeyes advanced to the quarterfinals of the qualifying-draw on Friday. Junior Greg Holm overpowered K. Mabatah of Purdue 6-2, 6-3, and sophomore Walker Grimes defeated C. Richardson of Michigan State 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Gentry Kaegi advanced by defeating Minnesota’s A. Altepeter 7-6(6), 6-1. Additionally, freshman Austen Kauss and sophomore Patrick Dwyer were defeated in the round of 16. Kauss fell to M. DePietro of Michigan 6-1, 6-2, and Dwyer was defeated by J. Toole of Penn State 6-4, 6-1.

Competition at the Big Ten Singles will continue over the weekend with play concluding Monday.
