IOWA CITY, IA –The Hawkeyes concluded their weekend in winning fashion today with a 5-2 victory over the Ole Miss Lady Rebels. Fresh from a 4-3 win over Alabama on Feb. 16, Iowa continued to play strong today and brought their season record to 4-0.
Iowa faced tough competition from Mississippi but prevailed early on, winning two of the three doubles matches and earning the doubles point. At the number one position, Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr defeated Mississippi’s Nika Koukhartchouk and Karen Nijssen 9-8(5). Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen fell in a hard-fought 8-6 loss to Laura van de Stroet and Mimi Renaudin at the number two spot, but Iowa sealed the doubles victory when Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei defeated Preethi Subramanian and Soledad Podlipnik 8-2.
In singles play, the Hawkeyes finished with a 4-2 record today. Veselinovic, at the number one position, defeated Nika Koukhartchouk in a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory while Jacqueline Lee was also successful against Karen Nijssen with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Beelen fell in a close match 6-4, 7-5 to Laura van de Stroet, but Alexis Dorr kept Iowa’s momentum going with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Soledad Podlipnik. Kelcie Klockenga was defeated 6-3, 6-2 after a hard-fought match against Preethi Subramanian, and Poggensee-Wei, at the number six spot, rounded out singles for Iowa with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mimi Renaudn.
“It was two great wins for us this weekend beating two tough SEC teams,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “Our girls stayed focused and fought hard throughout the lineup. Our freshman stepped up and won some keys matches closing it out against Alabama and we went 4-0 with two wins this weekend. Overall, it was a great team effort and I am really proud of the girls.”
The No. 45 Hawkeyes will look to continue their winning streak next weekend when they face Missouri and Northern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 23. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. against Missouri and 4 p.m. against Northern Illinois at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
