Hawkeyes Shut Down Missouri

Feb. 23, 2008

IOWA CITY, IA — The No. 42 Hawkeyes remain undefeated after a 6-1 win over the Missouri Tigers this afternoon. Iowa extended its winning streak to 5-0, its best start since the 1993-94 season. The Hawkeyes’ victory ended Missouri’s seven-match winning streak, its longest since the 2005 season.

Iowa had an exciting start to the day, sweeping doubles 3-0. The Hawkeyes earned the doubles point in three close matches and improved their dual meet doubles record to 13-2. Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr defeated Missouri’s top doubles duo of Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber 8-6. Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen were successful at the number two position, earning an 8-5 win over Kaitlin Dunham and Sofia Ayala. Rounding out the doubles for the Hawkeyes, Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei defeated Jessica Guiggoli and Kaitlyn Ritchie 9-8(7-3).

In singles action, the Hawkeyes kept up their momentum and went 5-1, their best dual match singles record of the season. Veselinovic and Dorr both extended their dual match singles records to 5-0. Missouri did not give up without a fight, however, and four of the six singles matches went to a tie-breaking third set.

Lee, at the number one position, defeated Mallory Weber in an intense 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 victory. Veselinovic prevailed in a long battle against Jessica Guiggoli, coming out with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win. Dorr, moving to the number three spot this week, defeated Kaitlin Dunham 6-3, 6-4 while Beelen fell 6-4, 6-4 in a tough match to Chrissy Svetlic. Poggensee-Wei stayed focused in a close match against Kaitlyn Ritchie and earned another singles point for Iowa with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Sophomore Kelcie Klockenga fought back after losing the first set to defeat Maureen Modesto 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

The Hawkeyes will host the Northern Illinois Huskies next Friday, Feb. 29. Competition is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center on the University of Iowa Campus.
