IOWA CITY, IA–The No. 41 Iowa Women’s tennis team shut down the Northern Illinois Huskies tonight 7-0, extending their winning streak to 6-0. The Hawkeyes swept doubles and singles competition, bringing their dual meet doubles record to 15-2 and their dual match singles record to 25-11.
Opening the match with doubles competition, Iowa swept the competition 3-0 and earned the first point of the match. Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr, at the number one doubles position, defeated Lilian Asuaje and Brooke Forsberg 8-2 and improved their doubles record to 6-0. A new duo for Iowa, Kelcie Klockenga and Lynne Poggensee-Wei were successful in their match with a 8-5 victory over Nau Umemura and Jenny Edner. Kayla Berry and Jennifer Barnes, also making their debut as a doubles duo, defeated Katie Friedland and Doris Delgadillo 8-2.
Keeping up the momentum, Iowa dominated singles play and won all six matches for the first time this season. Veselinovic, playing at the number one position for Iowa, defeated Lilian Asuaje 6-1, 6-0 and improved her singles record to 6-0. Lee was successful at the number two spot with a solid 6-1, 6-0 win over Katie Friedland. Dorr also improved her singles record to 6-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Nau Umemura. Klockenga, moving to the number four position, dominated against Brooke Forsberg and came out on top with a 6-0, 6-0 win while Berry wrapped up singles play for the Hawkeyes, defeating Doris Delgadillo 6-2, 6-1.
“The girls were impressive tonight,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “We reached our goal, at this point, of getting that 6-0 before starting Big Ten play. I think we’re ready for Minnesota and we are excited about starting Big Ten play.”
The Hawkeyes will travel to Minneapolis, MN for their first Big Ten match of the season against the No. 54 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center.
