Manhattan, KS – The No. 43 Iowa women’s tennis team defeated Kansas State, 6-1, at the Washburn Tennis Facility in Manhattan, KS. With the victory, the Hawkeyes moved to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play.
Iowa started strong, winning two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Kudlackova/Klimova 8-3. Merel Beelen and Kayla Berry were also victorious as they defeated Yrureta/Vieira 8-6. Mili Veselinovic and Lynne Poggensee-Wei fell at the No. 3 position, 8-7 (9-7), to Huljev/Cottin.
The Hawkeyes continued their solid play, winning five singles matches on the day. Alexis Dorr defeated Katerina Kudlackova 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) at the No. 3 singles position. At No. 4 singles, Merel Beelen defeated Vanessa Cottin 6-4, 6-3. Kelcie Klockenga and Lynne Poggensee-Wei also claimed victories. Klockenga defeated Natasha Vieira 6-4, 6-3 and Poggensee-Wei defeated Olga Klimova 6-1, 6-1.
In addition, senior Mili Veselinovic defeated Antea Huljev, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3). With the victory, Veselinovic set the school record for most career singles wins. She has 103 career singles victories.
“Today was our first match outdoors, which can be difficult,” said Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “Our girls responded very well. Kansas State is a tough team and we had some close matches. Yet as we have been doing all year long, we pulled it out in the end.”
Iowa will travel to Lawrence, KS, to face the Kansas Jayhawks tomorrow. Competition will begin at noon.
