Central Florida Knocks Off Iowa

March 20, 2008

Box Score

The University of Iowa softball team was defeated by Central Florida, 4-1, Wednesday in Orlando. Iowa drops to 18-10 with the loss.

Central Florida took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Back-to-back Golden Knight singles started the frame and leadoff hitter Marquita Council scored later in the inning off a wild pitch.

The Golden Knights doubled their lead with a squeeze bunt in the second inning. With a runner on third, Abby McClain laid down a bunt that stopped in between home plate and the pitching circle that allowed Allison Kime to score.

Central Florida took advantage of two Hawkeye errors in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead, but the Hawkeyes responded with one run in the top of the sixth for a 4-1 deficit. Sophomore Lindsey Digmann started the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. She scored on an RBI double down the left field line by junior Erin Riemersma.

Digmann went 2-3 with a run scored to lead the Hawkeye offense.

Sophomore Amanda Zust falls to 7-2 with the loss. She tossed just over three innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three. Junior Brittany Weil threw just over two innings and gave up two unearned runs on only one hit with one strikeout.

Iowa returns home to host the Hawkeye Classic this weekend. The Hawkeyes will face Northern Illinois Saturday at 2:30 in their first game of the Classic.
