LAWRENCE, KS – The No. 43 Iowa women’s tennis team defeated Kansas, 4-3, in Lawrence Thursday. With the victory, the Hawkeyes moved to 10-1 overall.
The Jayhawks claimed the doubles point, taking two of three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Avdeeva/Horvath defeated Lee/Dorr 8-6. At the No. 2 doubles position, Veselinovic/Beelen defeated Hommell/Dorn 8-4. In addition, Martinez/Tokarczyk defeated Berry/ Poggensee-Wei at the No. 3 position, 8-6.
The Hawkeyes claimed four singles matches on the day to claim the victory. Jacqueline Lee rebounded after her defeat Wednesday. She defeated Magdalena Tokarczyk 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1 position. At No. 3 singles, Alexis Dorr defeated Edina Horvath 6-3, 6-1. Additionally, Lynne Poggensee-Wei defeated Maria Martinez 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. The match was tied 3-3 and it came down to the No. 2 singles position. Milica Veselinovic clinched the victory for the Hawkeyes, defeating Elizaveta Avdeeva 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-0.
“We really struggled playing outdoors today,” said Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “It really showed in the doubles. The team responded well in singles play and we were able to win a close match.”
Iowa will return to action Saturday, when they play at Big Ten rival Indiana. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
