Hawkeyes Win Nightcap

March 26, 2008

Box Score

IOWA CITY – Iowa defeated Northern Illinois, 1-0, in Wednesday’s nightcap to sweep the doubleheader. The Hawkeyes improve to 20-10 with the win.

Iowa scored its lone run in the third inning. Freshman Jenny Schuelke doubled to left field and scored on an RBI single by freshman Chelsey Carmody.

One run was all Iowa needed with sophomore Amanda Zust’s performance in the circle. Zust tossed a complete game one-hitter, giving up the lone hit in the fourth inning. She retired the first nine batters in a row before allowing a hit, and then sat down the final 10 batters of the game. Zust finished with three strikeouts and no walks.

Junior Colleen McGlaughlin tallied eight assists at third to lead Iowa defensively. The Hawkeyes did not commit an error in 13 innings of play Wednesday.

“It was great to finally play at Pearl Field,” Head Coach Gayle Blevins said. “We had two quality practices this week and I thought we played two great games today. Our offense really clicked in the first game and our pitchers turned in two solid performances today. Our defense was outstanding and we are looking forward to opening Big Ten play this weekend.”

Iowa opens Big Ten play Friday at Ohio State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. (CDT).
