Box Score

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team downed Northern Illinois, 8-0, in six innings in game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader. The Hawkeyes tallied nine hits and took advantage of four Northern Illinois errors.

Junior Brittany Weil tossed a gem in her 12th win of the season. Weil pitched a one-hit shutout and retired 16 of the first 17 batters before giving up the lone hit. She hit one batter in the third inning and then sat down eight in a row. She finished with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Iowa opened up a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore Katie Brown started the frame with a single and junior Callie Adreon entered as a pinch-runner. Senior Summer Downs followed with a single and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Freshman Jenny Schuelke drew a walk to load the bases, forcing a Northern Illinois pitching change. Freshman Chelsey Carmody greeted new pitcher Taryn Hagemann with an RBI single to right, scoring Adreon for the first run of the contest. Sophomore Lindsey Digmann then slapped an infield single that plated Downs. Junior Erin Riemersma’s ground ball was then bobbled at third base, which allowed Schuelke to slide in safely. Northern Illinois’ second error of the inning gave Iowa a 4-0 advantage. Senior Emily Nichols lined a ball to shortstop and the attempted throw to third for a double play sailed to the fence and Carmody scored. Iowa wrapped up its scoring with an RBI single by junior Colleen McGlaughlin.

Junior Quinn Morelock increased Iowa’s lead to 7-0 in the fourth with a two-run home run to left field. Morelock’s home run was her first hit of the season.

Carmody, Digmann and Morelock each collected two hits while Carmody and Morelock added two RBI.

Iowa will take on Northern Illinois in game two of today’s doubleheader at approximately 5 p.m.
