Iowa Falls To Michigan At Home

IOWA CITY, IA–The 45th ranked Hawkeyes fell 7-0 to No. 29 Michigan today in their first match back home after four matches on the road. Iowa went 1-2 in doubles competition and 0-6 in singles. Today’s loss brings Iowa to 1-3 in the Big Ten and 10-4 overall this season. The Hawkeyes only victory of the day was from the duo of Mili Veselinovic and Lynne Poggensee-Wei in doubles competition.

The match began with an exciting doubles round, with Michigan narrowly claiming the doubles point. Michigan’s Lindsay Howard and Rika Tatsuno defeated Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga at the number three spot 8-2, but Iowa answered with a victory from Veselinovic and Poggensee-Wei who defeated Whitney Taney and Denise Muresan 8-3. The battle for the doubles point came down the number one position, with the 46th-ranked duo of Tania Mahtani and Chisako Sugiyama defeating Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr 8-5 in an intense match, putting Michigan in the lead 1-0.

Moving into singles competition, the Hawkeyes faced two ranked opponents in Sugiyama and Mahtani. Dorr fell to Muresam 6-3, 6-1, while Berry was also defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Howard. At the number one position for the Hawkeyes, Lee played a tough match but was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by 66th-ranked Sugiyama. In a tight match, Klockenga was narrowly defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Tatsuno and Poggensee-Wei put up a fight against 106th-ranked Mahtani but fell in the third set 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Veselinovic suffered her first singles loss of the season to Taney 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, ending her winning streak and bringing her singles record to 13-1.

“Michigan was definitely too strong for us today,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “Our girls need to find a way to respond and get ready for Penn State tomorrow.”

The Hawkeyes will host Big Ten opponent Penn State tomorrow morning at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. beginning with doubles.
