Riverside, CA – The University of Iowa softball team won its first game of a doubleheader Saturday, downing host-school UC Riverside, 4-0, at the Amy S. Harrison Classic. Iowa scored all four of its runs in the first three innings.

Iowa took an early 2-0 lead in its first at-bat. Freshman Chelsey Carmody started the inning with a single and moved to second when sophomore Lindsey Digmann reached on an error. Junior Colleen McGlaughlin sacrificed the runners to second and third and then junior Erin Riemersma was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carmody crossed home on a wild pitch and Digmann scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Summer Downs.

Carmody roped an RBI single to center for Iowa’s third run of the game in the second inning. Junior Rachel West hit a one-out infield single and then stole second. She scored later in the frame off Carmody’s single.

The Hawkeyes added another run in the fourth inning. Riemersma doubled to center and scored on an RBI single by Downs.

Junior Brittany Weil threw her eighth complete game and her third shutout in the win. She allowed only two hits and recorded her first double-digit strikeout performance of the season, fanning 11 batters with no walks. Weil tossed 87 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Carmody finished 2-3 with an RBI while Downs went 1-2 with two RBI.

Iowa returns to action Saturday at the Amy S. Harrison Classic against Buffalo. The game will start at roughly 3:15 p.m. central time.
