IOWA CITY, IA — The Hawkeyes final home match of the season and senior day was slightly less celebratory than most had hoped for. No. 47 Iowa fell 6-1 to unranked Wisconsin after the Hawkeyes lost the doubles point and five of their six singles matches. Iowa is now 11-8, 2-6 in conference play. Today’s loss was Wisconsin’s first Big Ten win this season as the Badgers improved to 8-13 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
The Hawkeyes put up a fight in the doubles competition, coming from behind at the number one position to win the match. Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr clinched an 8-6 victory over Elizabeth Carpenter and Katya Mirnova. The win was not enough however, as the Hawkeyes fell at the second and third positions and lost the doubles point to the Badgers.
Moving into singles play, the Hawkeyes were down 1-0 and looking to earn the singles points. Dorr was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Jessica Seyferth to give Wisconsin a 2-0 lead, but Mili Veselinovic’s 6-0, 7-5 win over Emese Kardhordo put Iowa on the board 2-1. The Badgers lengthened their lead to 3-1 after Lynne Poggensee-Wei fell at the fifth position, 6-2, 6-2, to Chelsea Nusslock.
The match was decided at the sixth position. After a long and intense match, Kayla Berry was defeated by Morgan Tuttle 7-6 (9-7), 6-2, giving Wisconsin its fourth match point and its first win in conference play this season. Lee and Kelcie Klockenga both fell in tie-breaking third sets after winning their first set but dropping the last two. Lee was defeated by Carpenter 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Klockenga fell to Mirnova 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.
“It was a disappointing loss,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “Wisconsin really stepped up and played with a lot of energy and we did not respond. I hope we can use this example to help us play with more energy for our last two Big Ten matches and in the Big Ten tournament.”
The Hawkeyes will conclude regular season play next weekend as they travel to two Big Ten opponents. Iowa will travel to West Lafeyette, IN on Saturday to face Purdue. Competition is scheduled to begin at noon and will take place at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the Purdue University campus. Iowa’s final match of the regular season will be Sunday as the Hawkeyes travel to Campaign, IL to face No. 58 Illinois. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Atkins Tennis Center on the University of Illinois campus.
