IOWA CITY – The 25th-ranked University of Iowa softball team defeated Minnesota, 2-0, in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader. The Hawkeyes managed to pick up the win despite being out-hit, 5-4.
Iowa scored the first run of the game without recording a hit in the second inning. Walks by junior Erin Riemersma and sophomore Katie Brown put runners on first and second with two outs. Freshman Jenny Schuelke then ripped a ground ball that slipped underneath the Golden Gopher second baseman and a hustling Riemersma beat the throw home with a feet-first slide.
The Hawkeyes doubled their lead in the fourth. Senior Emily Nichols started the frame with a single and moved to second on a groundout by senior Summer Downs. Junior Callie Adreon then entered at second base as a pinch runner and scored on an RBI single by Brown.
Brown finished 2-2 with an RBI to lead Iowa at the plate.
Junior Brittany Weil improved her record to 20-10 with the complete game shutout. She allowed no runs on five hits while striking out seven.
Iowa and Minnesota will play game two of Sunday’s doubleheader at approximately 2:30 p.m.
