WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — The 57th-ranked Iowa Women’s tennis team earned a solid 4-1 victory over tenth-seeded Penn State this evening to advance into the second round of the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championships. The seventh-seeded Hawkeyes are now 13-9, 3-7 this season and will continue tournament play tomorrow afternoon.
Iowa took control of the match early, winning two of the three doubles matches to gain a 1-0 lead over Penn State. Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Kelcie Klockenga were defeated (8-3) by Katelyn BeVard and Dorothy Dohanics but Mili Veselinovic and Kayla Berry were able to hold off Jenny Shular and Lauren McCarthy to claim a 9-7 win and put the Hawkeyes in position to take the doubles point. Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr secured the doubles point for Iowa, winning an intense battle against Sarah Lotto and Lauren Holzberg in a 9-8 (7-5) decision.
Moving into singles competition with a 1-0 lead, the Hawkeyes were looking for just three singles point to win the match. Veselinovic put the Hawkeyes up 2-0 with a solid 6-2, 6-0 victory over BeVard but Penn State fought back with Denise Zobeideh’s 6-3, 6-0 win over Berry, making the score 2-1. Veselinovic’s victory this evening marks her 26th singles victory in her senior season at Iowa, tying her for the school record for most singles wins as a senior. Iowa lengthened its lead to 3-1 when Klockenga defeated McCarthy in a 6-4, 6-4 decision. The deciding point for Iowa came down the number one position, and Lee delivered for the Hawkeyes. Lee took down Jenny Shular (7-6 (7-4), 7-5) after an intense battle to earn Iowa’s fourth point of the match and secure the victory.
Iowa advances into the second round of the Big Ten Championships tomorrow afternoon, facing second-seeded Michigan at 1 p.m. (CT). If there is inclement weather, the match will be played at 3 p.m. (CT). This will be Michigan’s first match of the tournament and the Wolverines are currently 16-4, 9-1 in conference play. Competition will take place at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the Purdue University campus.
