IOWA CITY, IA — Hawkeyes Kineke Alexander, Meghan Armstrong, John Hickey and Tammilee Kerr are set to compete at the 2008 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Under 23 Games in Toluca, Mexico. Competition starts today (July 18) and will run through Sunday (July 20).
Alexander will compete for her native St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the 400 meters, Armstrong will represent the United States in the 10,000 meters, and Kerr will compete in the heptathlon for the Jamaican squad. All women’s three student-athletes recently completed their collegiate eligibility at Iowa. Hickey, who will be a senior at Iowa this fall, will throw the shot put for the United States men’s team.
Alexander was an eight-time all-American at Iowa, which is the most of any Hawkeye in school history. She won the 2006 NCAA Indoor 400-meter title (52.16) and was a five-time Big Ten champion. She set indoor school records in 200 (23.49), 400 (51.48) and 600 meters (1:27.45), and as part of 1,600-meter (3:40.52) and distance medley (11:20.11) relays, and the outdoor school record in 400 meters (51.35).
Armstrong was a four-time all-American and two time Big Ten champion at Iowa. The five-time all-region honoree was Iowa’s 2008 female Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient. She is the first Hawkeye women’s cross country runner to earn three all-region honors. Armstrong set school record in 1,500 meters (4:17.41) and as part of indoor distance medley relay (11:20.11) and outdoor 6,400-meter relay (19:15.42).
Kerr earned her first all-America honor in the heptathlon at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She set Hawkeye school records in the pentathlon (3,974 points) and heptathlon (5,633 points).
