IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Central Michigan Friday at Grant Field, 9-0. The sixth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 5-2 on the season.

It did not take long for the Hawkeyes to get on the board. Sarah Pergine scored off a breakaway in the first minute of play. Moments later in the fifth minute, Caitlin McCurdy hit an open Katie Naughton on another breakaway. Naughton slammed it home to make the score 2-0. McCurdy and Naughton would hook-up again moments later. In the 14h minute, Naughton blasted home a pass from McCurdy to make the score 3-0. The first half would end with the Hawkeyes leading 3-0.

Like they did in the first half, Iowa answered quickly in the second. Thirty seconds into the half, Lauren Pfeiffer slammed home another Hawkeye goal off a beautiful pass from McCurdy. This made the score 4-0 and McCurdy had her third assist of the game. In the 39th minute, Pergine scored again. She chipped home Iowa’s fifth goal of the afternoon off a great pass from Caroline Blaum. Blaum would get a goal of her own off a pass from Tricia Dean in the 49th minute, making the score 6-0.

The Hawkeyes did not stop there. Lindsey Duffy scored off a deflection in the 53rd minute, moving the Iowa advantage to 7-0. Then at the 55:11 mark, McCurdy scored her first goal of the game. It was assisted by Dean and Jess Werley. One minute later, Amy Baxter would score her first goal of the season off a great pass from Pergine.

Today’s victory is the largest margin of victory for an Iowa team since 1997 when the Hawkeyes defeated Southwest Missouri State, 11-0. The last time Iowa scored nine goals in a game was against New Hampshire in 2003. In addition, with Iowa’s 8-0 win over Pacific last Sunday and today’s 9-0 victory, the 17 goals scored in back-to-back contests are the most since October 5th and 6th of 1985.

“Everyone really did a great job today,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Everyone accepted their roles and contributed. It was a great team effort.”

Iowa plays Boston University Sunday at Grant Field. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
