EVANSTON, IL – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team concluded play at the Northwestern Invitational Sunday. Iowa claimed four singles wins and two doubles victories on the day and won a combined 26 matches during the duration of the tournament. Teams competing along with the Hawkeyes include DePaul, Illinois State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Michigan State, Western Michigan, Toledo and Bradley.
Christian Bierich won Flight A with two victories Sunday. The senior defeated Northwestern’s Marc Dwyer 6-3, 6-3 and DePaul’s Jose Moncada 6-1, 6-3 to win the flight. Junior Tommy McGeorge was runner-up in Flight B. He defeated Tobias Reitz of Northwestern 6-1, 6-2 before losing to Peter Rispoli of Northwestern 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.
In doubles competition, McGeorge and freshman Will Vasos continued their stellar play and won Flight B. The duo defeated Kafka/Spector of Northwestern, 9-7.
“It was a very good performance for us especially in the first event of the fall season,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “There was some great competition and I am especially proud of Christian [Bierich], Tommy [McGeorge] and Will [Vasos] and for what they accomplished at this very competitive tournament.”
