Iowa Travels To Gopher Invitational

IOWA CITY-

THIS WEEK — The Iowa Women’s Tennis team heads to the Minnesota Gopher Invitational, Friday through Sunday in Minneapolis, MN. Competition will take place at University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. Competing for the Hawkeyes this week will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelan, Alexis Dorr, Keclie Klockenga, Lynn Poggensee-Wei, Allison Majercik and Jessica Young.

THE HAWKEYES– The Hawkeyes will be joined this season by their newest member: Allison Majercik. Majercik is a four star recruit out of five from Overland Park, KS ranking 78th nationally according to tennisrecruiting.net. Sophomore Alexis Dorr was recently named one of 24 Hawkeyes to watch this season by hawkeyesports.com.

THE COMPETITION– Iowa will face competition from Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Lousiana State, Air Force, Nebraska, Gustavus Adolphus and South Dakota.

LAST SEASON– The Hawkeyes ended the 2008 spring season with a 3-7 Big Ten record, tying for the sixth seed in the Big Ten Championship. The Hawkeyes ended the season ranked 52nd with an overall record of 13-10.

HEAD COACH DARYL GREENAN– Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fifth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 13-10 overall record in 2008, going 3-7 in Big Ten competition tying for a sixth place league finish. Greenan was named 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Greenan has a 57-36 overall record in four seasons at Iowa. Mira Radu is the assistant coach and is in her first season with the Hawkeyes. She volunteered as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi (2003-2006) following her membership on the tennis team (1999-2003).

QUOTING COACH GREENAN– “I’m very excited for the season to start. I think we are going to find out where we are in our progress early in the season and I am sure we are going to learn where we can work to improve. I hope to see some of players step up and see some highlights from the girls. The competition is excellent at the Minnesota Invitational this year so that will provide a lot of opportunity for the team to see where we are at.”
