Hawkeyes Fall to Iowa Western, 9-5

The Iowa baseball team lost an exhibition game against Iowa Western tonight at Duane Banks field, 9-5. The Hawkeyes took an early lead in the second inning, but gave up nine runs to lose in the scheduled ten inning game.

Iowa’s tenth inning rally was cut short, only scoring two to lose 9-5. Kurtis Muller walked to start the inning, Wes Freie continued things with hard-hit single and Tyson Blaser took advantage of an infield error to load the bases. With one out, Trevor Willis hit an RBI-infield single to score Muller and Freie scored on a throwing error.

To lead the Hawkeyes offensively, Kurtis Muller went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Zach McCool went 1-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI.

The Hawkeyes got on the board in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Trevor Willis hit a triple to left center and was hit in on a McCool single through the right side.

The Reivers tied it up, 1-1, in the top of the third. Maxime Milot scored on an infield throwing error to put Iowa Western on the board.

The Black and Gold kept at it in the bottom of the third taking a 2-1 lead. Muller reached on a two-out infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Wes Freie drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Tyson Blaser delivered with an RBI single to left field.

The Hawkeye offense stayed hot in the fourth. Phil Keppler hit an RBI triple with two-outs to score McCool and take a 3-1 lead.

Iowa Western scored eight in the sixth through eighth innings to propel them to victory.

Iowa will host Nebraska in two weeks on Friday, October 17th. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
