UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 10 Virginia Saturday, 3-2. The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 11-3 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten Conference play on the season.
“It was a great battle of two top teams today,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Everyone stepped up and made big plays. We will have a great weak of preparation heading into the Ohio State game.”
The Hawkeyes struck first in the fourth minute as Lauren Pfeiffer tipped it in to make the score 1-0. The goal was assisted by Roz Ellis. In the 18th minute, Tricia Dean scored to push the Hawkeye advantage to 2-0.
Virginia answered in the 29th minute off a penalty corner. Inge Kaars Sijpestei found Floor Vogels who scored for the Cavaliers. This cut the Hawkeye lead to 2-1 and that is where the half would end.
Virginia tied the game at two at the 41:00 mark off a score from Traci Ragukas. The goal was assisted by Kaitlyn Hiltz.
With the game tied 2-2, sophomore Amy Baxter scored the game winning goal in the 52nd minute. The goal was assisted by Pfeiffer. This made the score 3-2 and the Hawkeye defense would preserve the victory.
Iowa returns home to face Ohio State Sunday. The match will begin at noon at Grant Field.
