WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team concluded play Sunday at the Purdue Fall Invitational. Teams competing along with the Hawkeyes included Purdue, Marquette and Butler.
In singles competition, junior Reinoud Haal was defeated in the finals of Flight A by Marquette’s Dusan Medan. Medan won 7-6, 6-4, (7). In the finals of Flight B, junior Tommy McGeorge lost to Niko Boulieres of Marquette 6-4, 6-4.
In addition, four freshmen competed this weekend for the Hawkeyes. Will Vasos, Tom Mroziewicz, Mat Nelson and Christopher Speer all played for Iowa. Mroziewicz, Nelson and Speer saw their first career action and each recorded their first career victories.
“Overall it was a good tournament for us given the fact that we were hampered a bit by injuries and illness,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “Half of our team consisted of freshmen and they performed well.”
Iowa will compete next at the ITA Regionals in Columbus, OH, beginning Thursday.
