COLUMBUS, OH – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team concluded the first day of competition Thursday at the ITA Regionals. Four Hawkeyes competed in the qualifying draw and each recorded at least one victory on the opening day.
Junior Tommy McGeorge continued his stellar play, recording two victories on day one. McGeorge, seeded fourth, defeated Chris Herron of Butler in the first round 6-4, 6-2. He then defeated Varun Chari of Wisconsin 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. McGeorge will face Will Kendall of Indiana tomorrow. The winner will advance to the main draw.
Patrick Dwyer defeated third-seeded Peter Rispoli of Northwestern in the first round, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. Dwyer was then defeated by Indiana’s Peter Antons 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
In addition, freshmen Will Vasos and Tom Mroziewicz both claimed first round victories before falling in the second round.
“We had a particularly good day today,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “Today was one of the best we have had here in the last few years.”
Iowa will continue competition at the ITA Regionals tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. (CT).
