COLUMBUS, OH – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team concluded the third day of competition Saturday at the ITA Regionals. The Hawkeyes have been eliminated from competition and finished with an overall record of 7-7 in singles competition and 3-3 in doubles competition.
“Today was a little disappointing,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “Overall though we played well throughout the tournament.”
Four Hawkeyes competed in the main draw Saturday. Senior Christian Bierich defeated Alex Sanborn of Northwestern in the first round 7-5, 6-3. He was then defeated in the round of 32 by Roy Kalmanovich of Illinois, 6-3, 6-4.
Junior Tommy McGeorge, who went 3-0 in the qualifying draw to advance to the main draw, was defeated in the first round. Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin defeated McGeorge 6-1, 6-3.
Seniors Christian Bierich and Greg Holm won two matches in doubles competition Friday, but were defeated in the round of 16. Allare/Kronauge of host school Ohio State defeated the duo, 8-2.
Iowa will compete next at the Big Ten Singles Championships in Madison, WI, beginning October 31.
