East Lansing, MI –
The Iowa women’s tennis team moved into day three of competition at the 2008 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday. The Hawkeyes hit the courts for singles matches in the main draw and consolation draw, posting a 3-3 record for the day.
Iowa’s Jessica Young fell short in the first round after a tough match against Minnesota’s Karina Chiarell, going 6-3, 6-2. Hawkeye teammate Lynne Poggensee-Wei was also defeated by a Big Ten opponent, 6-1, 6-3 against Michigan’s Denise Muresan.
Sophomore Alexis Dorr opened her singles tournament play Friday against second seeded Lauren Lui of Northwestern. Lui came out on top, defeating Dorr in a hard fought match, 7-5, 6-1. All three main draw competitors rallied with great wins in the back draw.
“We had some tough draws in the singles, and we lost some matches to quality opponents,” said Hawkeye Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “I was definitely happy with the way all three of our main draw competitors bounced back and pulled off quality wins in the back draw.”
Iowa will return to competition on January 23-25 when they host the Hawkeye Invitational at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex in Iowa City, IA.
