IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Missouri State Sunday at Grant Field, 8-0. The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 10-2 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten Conference play on the season. Iowa has won eight straight matches and has outscored their opponents by a 42-4 margin in that stretch.

The Iowa offense was led by senior Lauren Pfeiffer and sophomore Sarah Pergine. Pfeiffer recorded three goals on the afternoon. It marks the second time this season that Pfeiffer has scored three goals in one game. In addition, Pergine recorded three assists and one goal against the Bears.

It did not take the Hawkeyes long to get on the board. Caitlin McCurdy scored in the second minute of play, giving Iowa an early 1-0 advantage. In the tenth minute, Pfeiffer scored off a pass from Pergine, making the score 2-0.

In the 21st minute, Pergine made a beautiful pass to Katie Naughton, who scored from ten yards out. Moments later McCurdy would score her second goal on the day, pushing the Iowa advantage to 4-0. The first half would end with the Hawkeyes leading 4-0.

Iowa would keep the pressure on in the second half and in the 40th minute, Pfeiffer struck again. Senior Caroline Blaum found an open Pfeiffer and the senior from Mt. Laurel, NJ, slammed it home. In the 50th minute, Pfeiffer would get another goal off a corner, her third score of the day. The goal was assisted by Tricia Dean and Pergine.

Sophomore Chelsea Miller scored her first career goal in the 66th minute. This made the score 7-0 in favor of the Hawkeyes. Just moments later, Pergine added a goal of her own, making the score 8-0.

The Hawkeyes dominated field position all afternoon. The stingy Iowa defense allowed only three Missouri State penalty corners, compared to Iowa’s 14, and allowed only four shots, compared to Iowa’s 39.

Iowa travels to Penn State Friday. The match will begin at 2 p.m. (CT) and will be shown on the Big Ten Network as a same-day delay at 5 p.m. (CT).
