IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa soccer team brushed back North Dakota State, 3-0, in the Hawkeyes’ final non-conference match of the season. The Hawkeyes (7-5-1) were aided by three second half goals to knock off the Bison (4-7-2).

Iowa finishes the non-conference slate with a record of 6-4-0, their best mark since 2002. With the win, Iowa is now 5-1-0 at home this season and have won 10 of their last 13 matches played at the UI Soccer Complex, dating back to last season.

“We had to finish our chances in the attacking third, and I think we did a good job of that in the second half,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “It was another good team performance today.”

It was a tale of two halves for the Hawkeyes. The first half provided few offensive opportunities for both teams, as Iowa had four shots while North Dakota State had two. But the Hawkeyes turned up the heat on offense in the second half, out-shooting the Bison 13-2.

Freshman forward Alyssa Cosnek broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute with her seventh goal of the season. Sophomore Keli McLaughlin sped the ball up the far side of the field and played a perfect cross right to Cosnek, who tapped the ball past North Dakota State goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch for her second goal in as many matches.

McLaughlin added an insurance goal for the Hawkeyes in the 86th minute and senior forward Stephanie Hyink put the game out of reach with a goal in the match’s final minute. Freshman Morgan Showalter recorded her eighth assist on the season, while sophomore forward Amanda Martin got her first.

The Iowa defense was again in top form. Sophomore goalkeeper Kali Feiereisel started the first half and made two saves before leaving the game with an arm injury with just over three minutes left in the half. Freshman Emily Moran took her place and played the entire second half, making one save.

The Hawkeyes continue conference play at the UI Soccer Complex next weekend, with matches against Illinois (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Purdue (Sunday, 1 p.m.). Sunday afternoon’s match with the Boilermakers will be televised on the Big Ten Network, making it the first-ever televised home match for Iowa soccer.
