IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Big Ten foe Michigan Sunday at Grant Field, 3-0. The ninth-ranked Hawkeyes have finished the regular season with a 13-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Big Ten play.
Today’s victory secured Iowa the No. 2 seed in next weekend’s Big Ten Tournament at Indiana University. The Hawkeyes will play seventh-seeded Indiana in the first round Thursday at 9 a.m. (CT).
The first half was a defensive battle until the Hawkeyes broke through in the 30th minute. Senior Katie Naughton scored on a beautiful back-hand shot to give Iowa a 1-0 advantage. The first half would end there.
Naughton added her second goal of the afternoon in the 41st minute. The goal was assisted by fellow senior Caitlin McCurdy. With the score 2-0 in favor of the Hawkeyes, Meghan Beamesderfer found an open Lindsey Duffy, who scored from ten yards out.
The Hawkeye defense dominated in the 3-0 victory over the Wolverines. Iowa allowed only two shots and two penalty corners. In addition, senior goalkeeper Lissa Munley recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
Iowa finished the regular season with a record of 6-2 at Grant Field.
