Iowa Defeats Indiana In First Round

BLOOMINGTON, IN – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated seventh-seeded Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday, 5-2. The second-seeded Hawkeyes are now 14-4 overall and advance to the second round of the tournament.

It did not take long for the Hawkeyes to get on the board. At the 1:39 mark, Caitlin McCurdy found an open Sarah Pergine, who scored for Iowa. With the score 1-0 in favor of the Hawkeyes, McCurdy and Pergine hooked up again for Iowa. Pergine found an open McCurdy and the senior scored to push the Iowa advantage to 2-0 just three minutes into the game.

Indiana cut into the Iowa lead in the 21st minute with a goal off a penalty corner. The Hawkeyes would answer just one minute later. Pergine passed to Lauren Pfeiffer on a penalty corner to make the score 3-1 in favor of Iowa. Just two minutes later, freshman Becca Spengler scored her first career goal, pushing the Iowa advantage to 4-1. The goal was assisted by Katie Naughton.

The Hawkeyes scored their fifth-first half goal in the 30th minute. Pfeiffer added her second goal of the day off a rebound. Indiana would add a second half goal and the contest would end with a 5-2 Hawkeye victory.

Iowa has won seven-straight games at the tournament. In addition, the Hawkeyes tied a record for the third-most goals scored in a game during the tournament with five against the Hoosiers. Iowa will face third-seeded Michigan State Friday at 11:15 a.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes defeated the Spartans in overtime during the regular season, 4-3. The game can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
