EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State Spartans took a 26-19 lead into intermission and never looked back in handing the visiting Iowa Hawkeyes a 68-56 defeat Thursday night.
Michigan State was paced by center Allyssa DeHaan who scored 14 points. Kalisha Keane added 13 and Brittany Thomas 10 for the Spartans who used 23 second chance points to give the Hawkeyes their first loss in four games.
Iowa was led by Wendy Ausdemore’s 18 points and Kristi Smith’s 10. The Hawkeye shot just 35 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers. Iowa was also outrebounded 42-33.
The loss dropped Iowa to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten Conference play. Michigan State improved to 14-7 and 8-2.
Iowa returns to action Sunday when the Hawkeyes entertain Penn State at 1 p.m. in the annual “Pink Zone” game designed to raise awareness of cancer. The game is also National Girls and Women in Sport Day and all girls wearing the team uniform to the game will receive free admission.
