TEMPE, AZ – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Idaho State, 4-1, to open the 2009 Littlewood Classic, hosted by Arizona State University. Iowa now stands at 4-2 overall.
Iowa wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard, plating one run in the top of the first inning. Senior Colleen McGlaughlin was hit by a pitch with two outs and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior Katie Brown drove McGlaughlin in with an RBI single up the middle for the game’s first run.
Idaho State tied the game in the bottom of the second when Jennifer Martensen hit a one-out home run.
Brown gave Iowa the lead back in the third with a two-out, solo home run over the right field fence. The round-tripper was Brown’s first of the season.
Iowa increased its lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh. Freshman Missy Mazur entered as a pinch-hitter and was promptly hit by a pitch. She then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sam Heinzman and scored on an RBI triple by sophomore Chelsey Carmody. Idaho State’s third baseman then committed a costly error on a ball off the bat of junior Taylor Leichsenring, which allowed Carmody to score.
Carmody, Brown and Riemersma each had two hits, while Brown chipped in two RBI.
Junior Amanda Zust picked up her first win of the season, throwing 5.1 innings in the victory. Zust gave up one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts, while walking two batters. Senior Brittany Weil tossed 1.2 innings of relief for her first save of 2009. The Garden Grove, CA, native did not give up a run or a hit and struck out two.
The Hawkeyes are scheduled will face Kent State at approximately 3 p.m. (CT) Friday.
