ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The Iowa baseball team came out with a 4-1 win against Georgetown at Naomli Complex on Sunday. The Hawkeyes got their offense going early and Iowa’s pitching was able to keep the Hoyas off balance in the victory.
Georgetown (0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first. The inning featured two stolen bases and a single by Tommy Lee. Iowa starter Wes Freie struck out three in the inning.
Freie earned the win after striking out seven in five innings and allowing only one Hoya run. Relievers Nick Brown, Steve Turnbull and Mike Schurz pitched four solid innings. Schurz, in his first game back since undergoing Tommy John surgery, struck out three to end the ninth and picked up a save.
Iowa (1-2) tied it up in the fourth, 1-1, with a leadoff solo homerun by Freie.
The Hawkeyes kept their bats going in the fifth, scoring three to take a 4-1 lead. With one out, Chett Zeise hit a single to center field to start Iowa off. Kevin Hoef picked up his second hit-by-pitch of the game to put runners on first and second. Justin Toole hit a deep double to left field to bring in two runs. Kurtis Muller kept things going with a single to center. Toole later scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Freie.
The Hoyas made a run in the ninth, scoring one to cut the deficit to 4-2. However, after a rocky start, Schurz buckled down and struck out three to close out the contest.
In the win, the Hawkeyes recorded eight hits. Toole went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double, Freie went 1-for-4 with two RBI and Zeise, in his first collegiate start, went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Iowa will travel back to Florida next weekend to take on three different teams in DeLand. The first game is set for 6 p.m. (CST) Friday at Stetson.
