Iowa Defeats Marquette In Dual Match

Feb. 8, 2009

Milwaukee, WI –

The University of Iowa women’s tennis team defeated Marquette University Sunday 5-2 in an exciting meet in Milwaukee, WI.

After splitting the No. 2 and No. 3 positions in doubles competition, the doubles team point rested on the shoulders of Iowa duo Sonja Molnar and Alexis Dorr. The No. 1 doubles pair was down 7-4 before saving several match points. The pair ultimately kept their momentum, winning the tie breaker to give Iowa the point and a 1-0 advantage.

Molnar finished first once again for the Hawkeyes at the No. 1 position, winning 6-3, 6-3 against Paola Calderon to give Iowa a 2-0 team lead. After a loss at the No. 6 spot by Ally Majercik and a win by Lynne Poggensee-Wei in the No. 3 position, Iowa still held the lead, 3-1. After a loss by No. 2 singles Alexis Dorr, Iowa had to win the last two matches in order to walk off the courts with a team win.

Saturday’s matches required the Hawkeyes to step-up throughout singles play, and the athletes showed the same drive and determination Sunday. Kelcie Klockenga finished next, clinching an Iowa win by defeating Kylie Moore, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Jessica Young brought in the final win of the day at the No. 4 position, going 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 against Rachael Hush in another tough match. Klockenga and Young were both behind in their matches, and managed to earn comeback wins.

“It was a really exciting college match, and we are hoping to see a lot of that this year,” said Hawkeye Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “It was a really good win to pull off, especially seeing all our comebacks throughout the matches. We had good contribution from all of our athletes in the lineup this weekend. It’s a good feeling to come out and get quality wins, but it’s even better to see the progression made in our tennis play.”

Iowa returns to competition February 14 when they travel to face Alabama. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
